Tila beads have become popular I think year 2010. (Please, correct me if I’m wrong LOL) They’re flat square shaped beads with two holes. I find them best for brick and ladder stitching because with two holes, it has enough space for the thread to go in and out without getting too tight inside the bead’s hole. Sometimes I experience when I use seed beads for brick stitch the seed beads tend to break because the thread coming in and out the hole several times becomes too narrow and tight. With tila beads, having two holes will make it easier and like I said, giving enough space for the thread.
Tila beads added into a beadwork can also add a different dimension. Its flat surface can easily create a variation from the usual rounded or faceted texture on a piece of jewelry, but vice-versa, you can also use tila beads and make it the focal material or main design for a piece and adding seed beads or any other beads to embellish it. Tila beads are great for making cuffs as they lay flat on your wrist.
